FYS Unit -A- Essay Prompts

Essay One: Movies and Globalization (1-3 pages)
Think of a film that you've seen that seems to address globalization. If you're having a hard time thinking of any, look at the "texts" page of this website where I've listed a few. How does this movie address globalization? In other words, what aspect of globalization does the movie focus on and how does it (or doesn't it) relate that particular aspect to the bigger picture? Do you think the movie is at all accurate or insightful?

Essay Two: Sports/Music and Globalization (1-3 pages)
You can choose to write about either sports or music. If you are having trouble thinking of anything, go to the library's website and try typing in keywords in ProQuest, Academic Search Premier, or Lexis-Nexus.

Come up with your own hypothesis about your chosen topic. Focus on a specific incident, recent issue, or person. Is the specific incident an example of a larger trend? Do you think one thing is having an effect on another? For example, consider the effect that television has had on the way sports are played. Or consider the effect that mass immigration and the cheapness of stereo equipment has had on music. Alternatively, maybe the causation goes the other way. Maybe music and sports help globalization happen more easily.

Revised Essay:
For unit A, essays one and two are not graded. For a grade, you will pick one of them to revise. For this, you should consider doing a bit more research. I will grade you primarily on whether you have a clear thesis, whether your paragraphs have clear topic sentences, and whether the claims you make in each paragraph are supported by concrete evidence.

For this essay, I expect you to cite all of your references correctly in the MLA format. If you have a writer's handbook, use it to help you. If you don't, see here. Note, for a paper this short, you do not need a separate "Works Cited" page. Simply put it at the end of your essay.

Technicalities:
     1. Page Length -- "1-3" pages means at least one, and less than three. It does not mean almost one and more than four.
     2. Papers should have one inch margins and be in 12 point, Times New Roman font.
     3. Double spaced.
     4. In the upper right corner, put in this order single spaced: your name, the name of this assignment (e.g., "Movies and Globalization"), FYS 100-43A, Dr. Steven Thomas, and the date.
     5. Centered, above the first paragraph, in bold face, have your own title. No separate title pages please!!!
