Biology Club News

Biology Internship Program - On Monday February 26th, the Biology Club is cosponsoring a biology internship program and we need individuals willing to talk about their internships to help.  Talks can last fronm 5 to 15 minutes, and should describe what and how you got your internship.  Please help us as we all know how difficult it is to find an internship!  For more information, contact Kristi (6341 or email kskubista) or Greg (2457 or gmdukinfield).

Biology Internship or Job Search Strategies.
   
This session will identify strategies and options for finding internships/jobs, key items to consider in your resume, and things to consider when preparing for the Career Fair at the UM on March 2.  This program is sponsored by CSB Career Services and the Biology Club.

Summer Research Fellowships in the Biology Department.
            All current 1st year students, sophomores, and juniors are invited to apply for Summer Research Fellowships in the Biology Department.  Fellowships are intended for Bio/NS majors and minors, and will be of greatest benefit to students considering graduate school in the Life Sciences.

            Fellows are paid (about $2800 for 10 weeks) and receive free room and board.  Fellows live on or off campus and are expected to work full time from 6/4/01 through 8/10/01.  This summer, five professors are participating and seek students with interests in molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics, behavioral ecology, and microbiology.  See the posters now in the Science Center or open the file below for more information.

Applications are available online.  

The online form and a printout of your current transcript are DUE Feb. 23rd by 4:00 pm.  The online application form goes automatically to Dr. Marcus Webster, Biology Department Summer Research Coordinator.  Deliver your transcript to Ann Arndt, Natural Science Division Office, Engel Sci Ctr 257, by 4:00 pm on 2/23/01.


Lancy Foundation Fellowship for Summer 2001.
    Applications are now open for Lancy Foundation fellowships for research and creative work related to the theme "A Sense of Place: Environmental Stewardship in a Benedictine community".  This project funded by a grant from the Lancy Foundation to Derek Larson (History) and myself, provides for 10 students to work alongside faculty members on projects ranging from the Politics of Local Decision-making to the Sustainable Management of the CSB/SJU community.  Students from ALL academic areas are invited to apply.  Lancy Scholars will work on campus over summer 2001 (6/11 to 8/10), will be paid approx. $2800, and will receive free room & board.  Current sophomores are especially encouraged to apply, although Juniors and First Year Students of exceptional ability will be fully considered.  More information contact Dr. Marcus Webster, ext. 3176.  Applications are due February 23rd by 4:00 pm, delivered by hand to Ann Arndt, Natural Science Division Office, Peter Engel Sci. Ctr. 275.  Notifications will be made by 12 March.

Wild Rockies Field Institute
   
A representative from the Wild Rockies Field Institute (WRFI), an independent, nonprofit organization that offers undergraduate, rigorously academic, field-based courses accredited through the University of will be on campus on February 20.  Keep posted for more details.  For more information about the WRFI visit their web site.

Biology Career and Internship Fair 2001
   
On Friday, March 2nd from 11AM-3PM the University of Minnesota Annual Biology Career and Internship Fair will be held.  The location is McNamara Alumni Center, 200 Oak Street S.E., Minneapolis.  There are over 50 organizations scheduled to be there recruiting for their organizations.  For more information contact Ed Stubblefield in Career Services, College of Saint Benedict at 363 5707 or estubblefiel@csbsju.edu

MCAT Registrationnews from Dr. Manuel Campos 
    Registration for the April 01 and August 01 MCAT is now available.  You can register online.

     I encourage to go to the newly revamped AAMC student page for more detailed information on MCAT deadlines, application process updates and suggestions.  Recall that starting this year the AMCAS application is only available online.

    I also have the MCAT paper registration packages in my office, but the online registration is faster and more efficient.

    Finally note that the AAMC has a fee assistance program for the MCAT and AMCAS application for individuals with �extreme financial limitations�.  To get more information on the criteria to meet this definition and for more information on this program go to the following web site.

Internships & Field Experience - Alaska State Parks Volunteer Program:  Ranger Assistant; Natural History Interpreter; Program Coordinator;  Backcountry Ranger Assistant; Trail Crew; Park Caretaker; Museum Assistant.  These positions offer housing and expense allowance. Transportation to Alaska is the responsibility of the volunteer.  If you are interested in receiving college credit for your work, fill out the Supplemental Volunteer Intern Application. Analytical Lab Intern- Braun Intertec Corporation

Biology Department Seminar Schedule
    Dr. Chuck Rodell, the CSB/SJU Biology department seminar organizer has recently released the seminar schedule for spring semester.  Check the halls for the bright orange fliers.  The seminars are all scheduled for 4:00 p.m. in NEWSC 140. Refreshments and meeting with the speaker begins at 3:30 p.m. in NEWSC 150 (Museum).

Miscellaneous

Biology of the Pacific Northwest - 2001
    There will be an informational meeting for this 4 credit, upper division biology course that will be offered this summer.  This course satisfies the Group IV requirement for biology.  It is a month-long intensive experience in field biology and natural history.  The trip will run from 15 July - 13 August, 2001 and be lead by Dr. Gordon Brown and Dr. Larry Davis.  The cost of the trip is $1700-$2000 (depending upon enrollment).  For more information contact Dr. Brown (dgbrown@csbsju.edu, 3175) or Dr. Davis (ldavis@csbsju.edu, x 3328).

Celebrate healthy heart month
    Take care of your heart by eating heart healthy and exercising heart healthy.  Diane Veale-Jones, Nutrition Professor, and Steve Schmelzer, SJU Nursing Student, will present heart healthy information, offer blood pressure screening and explain the new �Health on Wheels Cart� sponsored by the Healthy Learning Community on             February 27, 2001; CSB - TRC Fireside Room 11:30am-12:30 pm      (dessert/beverage provided);  SJU - Quad 264 3:00-4:00 pm (refreshments provided).

Wild Rockies Field Institute
    A recruiter from the WRFI visited campus this past week to describe the programs available through the institute.  For more information, check out their web site.

Arctic National Wildlife Refuge
    According to a web site put together by the Defenders of Wildlife, �Big Oil is lobbying Congress to drill in the coastal plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. The refuge is the only remaining 5% of Alaska's North Slope not already open to drilling.�  If you are interested in this issue visit their web site for more information.

This is to announce a new on-line resource for science and science education students.  GrantsNet is a one-stop resource to find funds for training.  Professors and administrators who seek to provide undergraduates with research experience and other opportunities will, also, find hundreds of programs that offer support.  It is supported by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) GrantsNet is completely free.  GrantsNet can be accessed on line.
