[E.A. Oliver, artist] My first forays into the world of hypertext were two articles written about little known artists who flourished in the early and middle years of this century in Philadelphia, where I was born and educated.

  1. My grandfather, "Ellis Augustus Oliver, 1872-1937" and
  2. "William A. Hofstetter, 1883-1970," the husband of my paternal grandmother's niece. I visit his daughter, Mary H. Baker, during my brief, infrequent visits to Philadelphia, and she allowed use of material and graphics for the web article.

Other early hypertext exercises reflect an interest in ecclesiastical history and evocative or artistic examples of heraldric art:

  1. "An American Benedictine Armorial," by Dom William Wilfrid Bayne OSB, illustrated by small black and white versions of the arms of 26 American abbeys and priories.
  2. The Arms of The Commonwealth of The Bahamas
  3. The Arms of the State of Minnesota in stained glass with blazon; history and description of the State Seal, and the related file about heraldic stained glass, "Saint Benedict: Attributed Arms."

In January, ITS will reveal the new "internal website" on the WinNT platform. It is not yet clear how disruptive and degrading to existing websites moving from the Unix Origin200 platform will be.

For Christmas, John Bede Pauley OSB and I cooperated on websites for the Abbey Schola and the 1998 Christmas Concert and Midnight Mass.

Fall semester saw the rapid development of the Arca Artium website leading to the major exhibition of sacred art in November and December, "Mind of the Maker."

The American Benedictine Academy sessions that S. Diana Seago OSB and I hosted, "The Pilgrim's Way in Cyberspace" were well received during the convention, 9-12 August 1998. The Academy installed Fr. Eugene Hensell OSB as the new president, and he announced that technology would be a major theme of his tenure. The creation of an Internet Section of the Academy is likely.

The Benedictine Internet Commmission sponsored the first WebWeaver's Retreat, 26-29 July 1998, at Collegeville. It is being followed up by a Monastic Forum at St. Meinrad Archabbey in January 1998. The English Benedictine Congregation is considering plans for a similar experience in 1999.

With great compassion, the Chaplain's notice about the obsequies for Pat Randel, returning sophomore, was created, and it appeared for a few days in mid-June at the CSB and SJU website -- my last contribution as Webmaster. Information Technological Services is now responsible for the web at CSB and SJU.

June brought faculty back to campus briefly for Collaboratorium II during which Bro. Richard substituted at the last minute for the "Web 101" presentation on Tuesday, 9 June, at 1:00 P.M.

This is the first time there has been a website for Commencement so it is being featured in May. Bro. Frank Kacmarcik OblSB's Arca Artium website uses Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) a feature available to MSIE 3.0+ and Netscape 4.0+ browsers. CSS allow better control of formatting. Arca Artium uses Palatino typeface and a 55 pt. right margin. Heading colors and a sans serif face for the address are also set in the style sheet.

Amy Hertel and Brendan Kelly are two swell juniors who both won $30,000 Truman Scholarships. Philip Kronenbusch PhD, the Truman Faculty Representative in the ÛPolitical Science Department, provided the information and editorial assistance for the website.

I created an offsite "Chat Room" for the CSB and SJU Admission counselors, but I have little time available personally to visit it.
