Balfe, M. W. (Michael William), 1808-1870.

"I Dreamt That I Dwelt in Marble Halls," from his The Bohemian Girl: Opera in three acts. Words by Alfred Bunn, 1796?-1860, (Boston: Oliver Ditson, 1882) 101-104. Arline's reverie (.mid, 6K) was revived by Enya in her Shepherd Moons album, and Enya's arrangement and performance of "Marble Halls" (Reprise/Warner UK) graced the soundtrack of Scorsese's Age of Innocence (Columbia, 1993).

Balfe was included among those composers represented on Edison's cylinder recordings. Edison Amberol Cylinder recording #89 is "Marble Halls," sung by Edith Chapman. Released in 1909, it could possibly have been purchased by either Kathryn or Ellis Oliver.  James Joyce references the aria in both Finnegan's Wake and Dubliners (1914).
