Biology 221 Announcements

5/2/08    Note that the final is in room NSC140, our usual room.  THE MAKEUP CLASS WILL BE ON TUESDAY AT 9:30AM IN NSC140.

5/2/08    I'll cover most of what is assigned, I will not cover the material in the box on pp.1141-43.

4/22/08    The reading for Thursday is a little strangely organized.  The authors write the whole process of gametogenesis and fertilization in the first part of the reading, and then they rewrite it in more detail in the second part of the reading.  So, read both parts and I'll integrate material from both parts.  Read the box on pp. 838-839 only for your own interest, I won't cover it.  For the material on pp.835-6, just get the general idea of self-incompatibility, don't worry about gametophytic vs sporophytic as in Fig. 39.14.

4/16/08    For the reading for tomorrow, read the box on pp.1089-90 for your own amusement, I won't talk about it.  I'll cover everything else.

4/2/08    For the reading tomorrow, I won't go into detail on pp.181-2, signal transduction with Ca2+ or signal transduction via diacylglycerol and inositol phosphate.  I also won't talk about the material on pp.182-184, but you should look through it to see that it makes sense.  I WILL go into detail about the signalling via G proteins and cAMP so try to grasp that.

3/31/08    For the reading for tomorrow, I will go into detail about plant responses to light (blue and red light) and gravity.  I won't spend time on the material on pp.777-9 dealing with plant responses to flooding, drought, high salinity, heat, cold.

3/14/08    For the reading for Wednesday, March 26, I will be covering most of what is in there.  I won't do "Adaptations for hearing allow animals to live in a wide range of habitats", but it is kind of interesting.  I might get as far as doing basic eye anatomy, on pages 961-2, so you might read that as well.

3/13/08    For the reading tomorrow, read all that is assigned.  Skim through the "Genomes and Proteins" box on 1055-6 about aquaporins.  On page 1076 start at the bottom of that page with "Several Hormones Regulate Sodium and Potassium Ions in Vertebrates" and stop at section 50.5 on p. 1078.

3/11/08    For the reading for tomorrow, I'll cover most of it.  Really look at pp. 140-143, the five obligatory water/salt exchanges with the environment.  Skim through the Feature Investigation, I'll talk a bit about that.  Just skim p.149 for some background.  Otherwise I'll really cover about everything in this reading.

3/3/08    For the reading for 3/6, the syllabus is incorrect, on the first page, read 783-4, not 781.  In the 788-797 part, just skim 787-790.  I'll talk about fertilizer.  I'll talk about fixing nitrogen (791-2 and 797).  I won't talk about plant adaptations for acquiring phosphate and I won't talk about the box on pp. 793-4.  I'll talk about Mycorrhizae and also about legume-Rhizobia symbioses, otherwise I'll skip plant-prokaryote symbiosis.

1/29/08    THE FINAL EXAM HAS BEEN SCHEDULED for Friday, May12 at 10:30AM-12:30, as shown on the updated syllabus.  Arrange your travel plans accordingly.

1/17/08    As I said in class, we are now a day ahead of the syllabus that was handed out on the first day.  The online syllabus has been revised to reflect where we really are at.  As I also said in class, I am not very happy with the way Chapter 35 presents the plant anatomy and growth material.  I will pick and choose what I cover out of this chapter.  I have posted my lecture notes, so you should follow those and read from the book to supplement this material.  The book goes into great detail on some things I won't, and doesn't touch some things I will.  Please use my notes as the guide to what I expect you to know on the exam.  This won't happen often, but this chapter is .....unusual.
