Content (6 pts. possible):
(6 points) All aspects of the assignment are present and dealt with impressively. Reasons for seeking the major/minor, personal characteristics, course work, experiences, and a description of your current beliefs regarding teaching and learning are all dealt with clearly and concisely. The paper makes a compelling case for your acceptance into the department and requests an interview. Appropriate business letter format is used.
(5 points) The paper includes all aspects of the assignment; however, they are not dealt with as impressively as in the above category, or one aspect may not be dealt with in sufficient detail. The paper may not make a compelling case for the student’s acceptance, may not clearly request an interview, or may have minor problems in its format.
(4 points) An aspect of the assignment is dealt with only minimally, or multiple aspects may lack detail. The letter’s format may be very inappropriate.
(1-3 points) An aspect of the assignment is neglected, or multiple assignment components are dealt with poorly. The paper does not make an effective case for the student’s acceptance.
Writing (4 pts. possible):
(4 points) The two-page paper is quite well written. Its form is correct; there are essentially no mechanical errors, nor are there problems with grammatical usage, sentence structure, or word choice. The paper is very well organized, and it is a pleasure to read because of its clarity and elegant style.
(3 points) The two-page paper is generally well written though it may not exactly correspond to business letter format. Mechanical errors are minor and/or few in number. Problems with grammatical usage, sentence structure, and word choice are minimal. The paper is well organized and presents ideas clearly, but its style may lack the elegance of those in the above category.
(2 points) The paper is coherent, but has numerous and/or major errors in form, mechanics, grammatical usage, and word choice. The paper may exceed two pages, have an multiple incomplete or run-on sentence, read quite awkwardly, or have problems with organization and clarity.
(0 or 1 point) The paper may contain non-sequiturs as well as gross errors in form, mechanics, grammatical usage, or word choice. There may be numerous incomplete and/or run-on sentences. The organization may be so poor as to make it incoherent.
